Staying true to Charmed's signature blend of heightened reality and fantasy, Mechnology was faced with creating the Manor's destruction sequence using footage of the house from the show's archive. After reviewing all of the location's footage that had been shot over the last few years, sequences were picked that would best show off the explosion.
Mechnology artists built a detailed model of the house in four sections to conform to the desired type of explosion. It included the foundation and surrounding front yard, the first and second floor walls, and the roof. Textures were generated from the stock footage and camera mapped to the 3d geometry.
The ground floor section consisted of the foundation and lower wall pieces, which were built to match the live action set. The upper walls were built in pieces that allowed for physics simulations to drive the primary debris animation. The entire model consisted of approximately 1,000 individual parts. Simulations were run using specially-shaped objects behind the walls, pushing them outward with enough force to create the look the team was after.
Numerous layers of detailed debris were combined in the final composite, in addition to custom CG fire and smoke elements. Interactive light and shockwave elements were also added to complete the shot. |
