To emphasize the story point of a magical knife drawing blood, the director asked Mechnology to create a slow-motion shot of the drop spattering onto the altar floor.
The fully CG shot began with a Blender 3d fluid dynamics simulation. Utilizing a custom script written by Mark Theriault, the simulation data was brought into 3dsMax and stylized to match the heightened-reality look of the rest of the film.
Procedural textures of the environment were generated from reference photos taken on-set, while the blood itself was rendered with a glass shader modified to alter coloration based on the thickness of the shape. |
