To emphasize a squeezed milk carton's burst of liquid, the editors of The Fray's "How to Save a Life" video chose to use a simple freeze-frame effect. Shot at normal speed, the still image did not have the desired sharpness and definition.
Mechnology artists first painted out the existing milk from the original footage. A 3D fluid dynamics simulation was developed to match the character's movements and create the desired look. This was rendered at its full sharpness, and composited into the shot along with additional smaller milk particle elements. Realistic motion blur was added to the frames preceeding the final frame, completing the jarring transition to frozen time. |
