Mechnology helped director John Kretchmer bring the second season of Veronica Mars to a dramatic conclusion. For the episode, we worked with on-set VFX supervisor Gerard Black to help send a character off an ocean-side cliff to his death in the surf, 100 feet below.
A stuntman was shot hanging on the hood of the car and thrown onto a stunt pad a few feet away. Roughly two-thirds of the plate were replaced by Mechnology, including the stuntman himself.
After masking the unwanted areas of the footage, portions of the ground were replicated and painted to remove lighting rigs and crew from the shot. A computer generated cliff edge was created and composited into the frame. Next, footage from Mechnology's stock library of waves crashing along a shore was added into the shot. This was combined with a procedurally-generated 3D ocean surface to finalize the plate.
Finally, a virtual stuntman was modeled, rigged and textured with the help of reference photos taken of the actor on set. Several frames of the stuntman's performance were painstakingly matched to create a seamless transition from the real stuntman and the virtual one. A late request from editorial, the head light of the car was painted out to match continuity in the cut. |
